Pico (Papao's, Peewee's and Pocky's mom) is a lovebird with breeding set in her mind. I bought her & her pair from her previous owner which has used them for breeding for a year. They are sold probably because their children are just common green (cheap in the market, or because she's a bad hen). Anyway, she has no company pet bird mentality. Even when the nest box is gone, she still like collecting materials for nest. Besides eating, drinking, taking a bath, sun bathing, she'll spend her time in the corner sleeping... Won't play with toys, etc like the other birds. I just hope she can change ... someday.

My budgie was the same way for about 6 months... but she got over it. Now she plays and is interested in everything again. :) I hope Pico feels better someday too. She must have raging hormones.

How often your budgie lay eggs on her own?

She was never actually bred but because of her hormones she laid an egg... and a couple months after that was removed she laid 4 more in a week. She sat on that clutch for a month or more and did little else. Finally she went back to being herself. That's all so far, and I hope she doesn't get "eggy" anymore. It could happen again. I try to discourage nesting behavior if I can, but it's not very easy ^ ^'

Poor Pico... she KNOWS from experience she can make babies. Does she lay unfertilized eggs?

Yes, I know, like hens in farms. <__<
On previous clutches, there were always some infertile ones, only this time all fours are fertile :)

Hopefully sometime she'll decide to "retire" and not lay any more. She'll be happy and she'll always have her chicks! :)

I don't think they'll ever gather around like a happy family. Even in the wild, chicks get kicked after they are weaned and able to fly.

Oh, I thought they stayed together in flocks. I mean, I know they don't get babied once grown, but hopefully they don't get chased away :( Does mama pay any attention to Papao?

Nope. Birds are not family minded like ... elephants, for example.
They are more like... lions perhaps. The male will kill the cubs so that he can mate again with the females. Male lovebirds are not like that but it's the females which are very territorial. The nest box and area around it can't be entered by other birds except their chosen males. And they only choose 1 male at a time. On the other hand, FYI, males can flirt with other single females. "Married" females will kick their juveniles out of the box so that they can breed again. :)
