I AM loved by emmil I AM loved by emmil
I know I am loved... when hundreds of my kinds in the wild are trapped with net in the rice field. Every 10 to 20 birds are sold for 1 USD to a bird seller who later colors them and sells them in a cookie sized cage for human kids' play things. They will starve to death and end up in a garbage bin 3 days later. This photo: 2.bp.blogspot.com/-1k_3A455jpE… is the cruelest reality that happens to wild finches in Indonesia.

- Pipi.

somehow as I read the description, the sarcastic way you present it makes me feel like its meant to make the viewer[which most likely hasen't done any of this] feel guilty.

Yea.I was just saying how sarcastically you pitched it.Just made me think your where trying a guilt trip there.

I don't mind save the polar bear acts and so on even if I find some of them to be kinda redundant ,but I can't say I feel any sympathy to a cause where they try guilt tripping you into joining up and all.

On a happier note I was thinking of buying this society finch.
There's a beautiful white one I saw there thought I'd be happy with any color really.
I treat my pets well so in the interest of continuing to do so what would you recommend?
Is there certain foods he or she shouldn't eat?

I plan on getting an expansive cage but should I let it out once n a while?

How social are they? Should I buy two to keep each other company?

Just give it a balanced diet consist of seeds, veggie, fruits, eggshell/cuttlebone, fresh water daily and eggfood weekly.
I think all birds which are hand raised will be social; problem is no one sells a hand raised finch. Pipi is a rescue.
They will bond to each other if you buy two and they won't need you; it's a general fact for all bird species.
You can't let a bird out of cage if it won't step up on your finger. You'll end up freaking it out when u catch it to get it back to the cage later.
But the most important thing is if it's alone, make sure you can keep it company 6 hours a day at least. Else, it's best to buy two. :)

eggshell/cuttlebone . What is that?Do you mean to feed it actual eggshells or is this some sort of bird food brand?

I have plenty of time to spend with it and the birds they're selling are pretty young so there's time to get it used to me.

So until it trusts me I shouldn't try letting it lose in the room.got it.

fresh water wont be a problem.I buy spring water in bulk for my other pets.

I'd like to befriend it so I think I'll do one bird then.

Boiled egg shells.
If you like to eat boiled eggs, you can crush the egg shell and serve it on a dish or mix it with seeds.
Good for calcium supply. You can also buy cuttle bone and hang it in the cage. :)

It is so incredibly sad that people consider life disposable. Imagine if humans could get away with doing it to other humans, they'd change their mind and practices.

Are there animal rights groups over there?

Yeah, but they care most with cats/dogs, monkeys and endangered species birds :(

That sucks :( But perhaps it doesn't hurt e-mailing them, or starting a petition online and getting lots of us to sign it, and then send it to them :)

Damn. I hate seeing birds tortured and killed like that. It happens in the US with budgerigars and fish- people view them as cheap "throwaway" pets and often get them for their kids as "learning experiences." They don't much care when the kid doesn't take care of them and they die because they were only a few dollars and they can always just go get another. AUGH! I want petstores to STOP selling live animals. If you're serious about getting a pet, get one from a -reputable- breeder.  I guarentee that'd stop a large amount of the "throwaway pet" problem...

Although I agree with you, but it would be more likely to shut tobacco industry 1st before government would prohibit anyone from breeding animals without expensive license.

I would, but I can't, my hands are already full. And I won't buy them from the sellers because it will only encourage people to catch more. :(

Doing that, what was shown in the linked photo, here assures you of a one way ticket to jail for animal abuse to await trial.

You should create a group or movement or something like that to raise money to save wild finches in Indonesia, and spread the word of how cruel it is!

I can try bitching as loud as I can but as long as the birds are not considered as endangered species and rice farmers consider them as pest, people won't care...

D: No one out here kills house finches for fun; there's not even a "hunting season" for them. Why kill even prettier finches of Pixie's species?!

Thats because in the US it's illegal to mess with native birds like house finches.  Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 even posessing so much as a shed feather from a native bird is illegal. Now, non-native birds (like rock doves, starlings and house sparrows) you can do whatever you want with, up to and including mass murder of entire flocks. They're not native to the US and are an invasive species, often times driving out native species (Starlings driving out bluebirds and woodpeckers for example.)

(And prettyness should not be a factor in whether to save birds or not. "ugly" birds, like vultures, have just as much right to live a full life as "pretty" birds like parrots.)

Like I said before, farmers consider them as pest, because the finches like to eat their rice plants. ecodien.files.wordpress.com/20…

The birds are also sold as meat for human consumption in some cities fakinanti.files.wordpress.com/… and for bird of prey food imageshack.us/photo/my-images/… Although I don't like these ideas but at least they don't die in vain. Sometimes they are sold to be released by Chinese people as a symbol to kick away their bad lucks. Kind of releasing doves in wedding ceremony. They are packed in dirty small cages like this: jual-burung-pipit.blogspot.com…

But what I condemn is using the birds as a play thing for human kids. That's really heart breaking...

If they die in vain for no reason just to be play toys for kids, that's completely wrong. :( I wish people wouldn't do that.

Too bad people do it all the time, not just with finches but also with chicken chicks www.antarasumbar.com/id/foto/f… and gold fishes www.gedoor.com/wp-content/uplo… These things don't happen in my country only but almost in all Asia. Even in China, alive gold fishes and lizards are sold as key chains 4.bp.blogspot.com/-BfD37G9wcyM… Without food and oxygen, they'll die in a few days for sure...
