Mass sun bathing by emmil Mass sun bathing by emmil
Every morning at 6.30 am, for about an hour or two, they sit under warm early morning sun light to greet a beautiful day. They'll preen their feathers while singing. After that some of them will wait on the door waiting for their slaved human to bring the fresh food in.

My current wallpaper, download if you like it, personal use only, k? :)

My colony bird cage is in my yard, infront of my house, in front of my working room for exact.

Well, telling u the truth, I used to have an idea to build a small aviary and sell the chicks later. So I bought some pairs but 1 flew away and 3 died. I realized then how much it hurt me when I lost them, how much I actually have fallen for them and I don't think I will have the heart to sell them to others because here in my country, lovebirds are known as singing birds like canaries, not as companion parrots. They will be placed in a small cage like this: [link] with no toys and no socialization. So I promised to myself not to sell my birds even if some are not tamed, even if God let me have a chick. Four months later the leftover 4 birds become 2 new pairs and 2 months later, on my birthday, 1 of the pair finally had a chick, which is Papao. :)

That's a wonderful story, and so great of you. I really have such a sympathy for birds...it breaks my heart to see one injured or neglected in any way. They are just SO INTELLIGENT. People don't realize. That's what makes it such a crime when people just put them in a cage and leave them be.

What makes me sad to think of is when I was a kid we had two budgies, and I had no idea birds were like that. I thought they were mostly "for show," like so many other people. I didn't think they'd want to be handled. And granted, I was just a kid, but I wish I'd known better and interacted with them.

As long as lesson learned, it's ok. People make mistakes, like me too. We become better owners by learning from both good and bad experiences. :)

You share a birthday with your Papao? That's so sweet!
I didn't realize you're from Indonesia. Had to check. That's so sad that parrots are treated like decorations. :( Anyone that has one should know that they need attention and entertainment. Even a songbird needs more items in the cage than that. Ugh.
I am so glad that you treat your birds as wonderfully as you do. Your birds always look so happy! I can tell you love them a lot, and that they love you too. :)

Yeah, best birthday gift ever, and it was a mauve too. Before I've stopped buying bird, I was looking to buy a mauve but it was hard to find one and it was so expensive. Well, even a common wild color roseicollis is equal with $50 in my country, while ring eyed lovebirds will cost more. A lutino fischeri, a pied personatus or an opaline roseicollis can be sold around $200 - $300 each. A pair with succesful breeding history is 25% more expensive and once they can sing very long like this (15 seconds non stop) [link] & win a singing contest, even a common fischeri can be sold up to $1000!

I was drooling for the money... but that was before my heart was captured by the birds. I'm totally their slave now... XD

Wow, I can see where money comes in. Congratulations on the rare color! What an amazing gift. This is gonna be corny, but I'm gonna say it anyway. You got the birds because you wanted money, but instead you got happiness. And that's priceless. :D

It's ok, you are right...

I'm a poor artist and I'm only good with painting animals and taking care real animals. I thought it would be cool to have some cute pets while getting money from them too. I knew it was somewhat wrong to do it deep in my heart but I tried to justify it by saying that birds here are bought and taken cared by adults. They are not like puppies, hamsters or fishes that are usually sold to kids to be temporary "play things" and ended up dead or thrown away. I think I've sold my soul because I was desperate of money...

But once I learned the business, looking at how breeders bred their birds, how I got cheated, how those birds had eyes like humans... how devastating it was to have my bird dead on the way back from vet, and more when the other one dying and I know the vets around me are not avian specialists and they can not do anything to help animals below 0.5 kg.... Before I knew it, I think I got my soul back to me. I realize, any animals are just like dogs, cats and others. They have feelings... they are individually unique though, and they definitely can be abused by humans, children or adults. There are heartless people who will go beyond my imagination to gain profits and prevent losses. They'll sell splay legged birds as healthy birds. They'll snap their weak/handicapped chicks' necks because they are unsold... I was afraid I might become people like them, even if I've started it with good plans and more humanized way to breed birds... but who knows what I could do if I stayed in that business for a long time.

You'd better check the vets around where you live if they can handle small animals before buying birds. Otherwise you'll end up playing doctors like me. Even if I managed to cure my birds' illnesses/problems, some of them have been traumatic with the curing process. If you have bird vet, you can always have your vet playing as the "bad" cop that will "hurt" your pets, while your relationship with your birds will remain unblemished...
